How are neighbourhoods rated?
Each area gets a 1–5 rating for sights, food, nightlife, transport, quiet, families and value. Ratings compare areas within the same city, so a 5 for transport in Rome means one of the best-connected parts of Rome. Our About page explains each category.
Where should I stay on a first visit?
Usually somewhere central, within walking distance of the main sights, even if it costs a little more. You spend less time and money on transport. Each city guide marks the area we'd pick for a first visit.
Is it worth staying further out to save money?
Often, if the area is on a fast metro or train line. A cheaper room 15–20 minutes from the centre can be better value than a small one in the middle. We show the travel time to the centre for every area, so you can weigh it against the price.
What do the prices on the cards mean?
They are typical nightly rates for a mid-range double room in that area, shown in US dollars (last reviewed Sep 2026). They help you compare areas; for your dates, check live prices on a booking site.
